Charleston’s best dog-friendly parks offer more than space to roam; they create moments of joy. In the Lowcountry, we’re lucky to have a range of green spaces designed with both dogs and their people in mind.

The key is choosing the right spot.

Whether you’re sneaking in a pre-meeting walk or savoring a Saturday afternoon, here are our five favorite Charleston parks where your pup can stretch out, and you can too.

1. Palmetto Islands County Park

Palmetto Islands County Park feels like a secret forest tucked into suburbia. With its off-leash dog park, tidal creeks, and shaded walking trails, it’s a favorite for Mt. Pleasant locals who want room to roam.

There’s also a seasonal water park that’s great for kids, open weekends starting May 17 and daily from May 30 through August 3, with hours that vary by day.

2. James Island County Park

James Island County Park is more than just the home of Charleston’s beloved Holiday Festival of Lights—it’s a 643-acre paradise for pups and people.

The off-leash dog park includes a swimming lake, open space, and separate areas for large and small breeds. You’ll also find scenic walking trails through woods and marshes, plus one of the area’s top-rated playgrounds for kids.

3. Folly Beach County Park

Folly Beach County Park sits at the southern tip of Folly and offers everything you need for a breezy day out. Expect boardwalk access, seasonal lifeguards, dressing areas, restrooms, outdoor showers (clothes required), picnic spots, and even a snack bar during warmer months.

Dogs must remain leashed at all times. Note that pets are not allowed on the beach between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 1 through September 30. For full details, check the City of Folly Beach regulations.

4. Pitt Street Bridge

Pitt Street Bridge isn’t exactly a hidden gem these days, but it remains one of the most scenic walks in the Charleston area. Once a trolley bridge to Sullivan’s Island, it now offers panoramic marsh views, glimpses of the Sullivan’s Island lighthouse, and some of the best sunsets in town.

Recent improvements have made parking easier, and its wide, flat paths are ideal for a slow stroll with your dog—leashed, of course. With its breezes and long views, it’s a peaceful break from busier parks.

5. Hampton Park

Hampton Park is one of Charleston’s largest and most vibrant green spaces. With its off-leash dog run, paved walking loop, seasonal flower beds, and historic trees, it’s a favorite for everything from frisbee games to quiet Sunday mornings. You’ll also find restrooms and on-site parking—rare perks in downtown parks.

The park’s horticultural charm is on full display year-round thanks to extensive floral displays, an old rose collection, and unique Lowcountry trees. It even hosts an audio walking tour by the Charleston Horticultural Society that brings the park’s layered history to life.

Of course, this list only scratches the surface. From quiet neighborhood lanes to shaded trails and breezy beach paths (at the right times), Charleston’s full of little pockets where dogs and their humans can enjoy a good walk.

The best spot? It’s wherever your dog’s tail is wagging.
